Grete Weil was born in Munich in 1906, the daughter of a Jewish lawyer. When the Nazis came to power, she emigrated to Holland with her husband, the playwright and director Edgar Weil. In 1941, Edgar was arrested; he later died in a concentration camp. Grete went into hiding, and it was then that she began to write, first theater pieces, then fiction. Henry Rousso is a research professor at the Institut d'histoire du temps présent, CNRS. He is the author of The Vichy Syndrome: History and Memory in France Since 1944 (Harvard U.P., 1994).

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (Russian: Владимир Галактионович Короленко) was journalist, human rights activist and humanitarian. His short stories were known for their harsh description of nature based on his experience of exile in Siberia. Korolenko was a strong critic of the Tsarist regime and in his final years of the Bolsheviks.

Korolenko's first short stories were published in 1879. However, his literary career was interrupted that year when he was arrested for revolutionary activity and exiled to the Vyatka region for five years. Tor Ulven (1953–1995) was a Norwegian poet. He is considered one of the major poets of the Norwegian post-war era, and he won several major literary prizes in Norwegian literature.

His early works, consisting of traditional modernist verse poetry, were heavily influenced by André Breton and the surrealist movement. As the 1980s progressed he developed a more independent voice, both stylistically and thematically. The later part of his work consists mainly of prose. Dawid Sierakowiak was born in Poland in July 1924. He began his diary when he was fourteen, before the German invasion of Poland, and continued it until April 1943. He and his family were confined to the Lodz Ghetto, where Dawid recorded the deportation of his mother, the death of his father, and the starvation and suffering of all. He died of tuberculosis and starvation in the ghetto on August 8, 1943. He was nineteen years old. His younger sister, the last survivor of the family, was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 and presumably died there.

Peter Eisenman is an American architect.
