Na marketingstudies belandde hij eerder toevallig in het bankwezen, waar hij een mooie carrière na 17 jaar inruilde voor iets totaal anders: hij werd - samen met zijn vrouw - eigenaar en zaakvoerder van herenkledingzaak 'De Gouden Schaar' in Tienen (2011). In 2003 publiceerde hij samen met Louis Verbruggen en Jan Ceuleers het managementboek ‘Hoe word ik een winnaar en hoe blijf ik het’. in 2008 debuteerde hij op de fictiemarkt met een eerste thriller (Scherven). Er volgden nog 4 titels met dezelfde speurders in de hoofdrol. De Facebookmoorden (2010) is daarvan de bekendste titel. In 2013 schreef Debbaut een mooie novelle 'Als ik wakker word, ga ik dood'. In 2014 verraste de auteur ons met een satirische roman 'En toen schiep God Kevin'.
